Increased depth helps STHS swimmers deal with defections
Like many other athletic teams at South Tahoe High, the Vikings' swimming program is losing its star performers to other school districts.Evan Rabbetts, the only STHS swimmer to qualify for the Nevada state meet last year, and Hanna Bratton, the top swimmer on the girls' team, transferred to schools in Southern California after last season.Despite their defections, the team's veteran coach is excited about an unexpected development during the opening of practice last week."I really don't why, but we have a big group this year - 31 swimmers," said STHS coach Jerry Erickson, indicating that number is 10 more than last year's team. "That should really help us in our depth."Depth has hurt the Vikings in previous years, especially in the relay races where teams can pile up points from multiple entrants."We should have an A and B relay team for almost every event we have so many kids," Erickson said.Senior Da

Fairbank leads Whittell golfers with opening 75
Whittell High junior Trevor Fairbank didn't need to shake off any rust in the boys' golf season opener on Tuesday in Reno.Fairbank shot a 3-over 75 at Wolf Run to finish among the top scorers in an invitational that also included teams from Bishop Manogue, Hawthorne, Reno and Damonte Ranch."He came out holding his own against some of the better players in the area," said Whittell assistant coach Patrick Kelly. Other top scores for the Warriors included an 87 by T.J. Kolesnik and a 90 by Michael Koskin. Whittell will host the annual Ice Breaker on Thursday at Genoa Lakes.
